Many people don’t recognise abuse because it isn’t physical. Since the 2021 amendments, South Africa’s Domestic Violence Act explicitly covers controlling or coercive behaviour, as well as emotional, verbal, psychological and economic abuse.

Patterns to notice

  • Monitoring your phone, money or movements
  • Cutting you off from friends and family
  • Constant criticism or humiliation
  • Threats, intimidation, or making you feel afraid to say no

Recognising the pattern is a first step.
